Answer this question:
Edgar bought his bow tie 2 years ago for £4.50. It has doubled in price each year. How much is it worth now?

£18?

That’s what I thought. Anna answered £13.50 at first, and I corrected her to £18. Then the bloody answers in the back of the book said £13.50 … was I wrong, then, or is it the book that’s talking rubbish?

I think you’re right, Sarah. If they can’t say what they mean in the question…
Another question: Alice bought a new car from Bob for £20000. It has halved in price every year. Why didn’t she go to http://www.theusedcarspecialist.co.uk instead?
(Your fee’s in the post, right?)

I thoguht it was a trick question and so didn’t answer – but said £18 in my head. Def not £13.50 surely…. Max is looking outraged.

Depends how you look at it
first year its worth £4.50, second year its worth £9, added makes £13.50
BUT
Purchase for £4.50, value at end of first year = doubled = £9, value at end of second year = £9 doubled = £18
Question should be more explicit
(I said 18 quid too, but am a sad git who clearly hasnt spent enough time doing maths already this week and just had to see how the heck they got £13.50!)

I think it’s about book deppreciation. (currently running at 37.5 per cent).

It’s £18 my dd says the book is wrong.

def 18 – stupid book!

“first year its worth £4.50, second year its worth £9, added makes £13.50″
That’s not quite how value is calculated though, is it?
Be great if it was, my house would be worth nearly a million by now! lol!

when I read it, my first thought was about £1, which is still the cost that it cost to make the darn thing in the first place, and it’s just that they are ripping people off mightily this year, being as they are still having it made in a sweatshop in China somewhere…
then I thought £18, and I still don’t really understand why £13.50 is the right answer!
Sorry to be so daft

£13.50 *isn’t* the right answer!!!
