The Granite Way

June 3rd, 2006 by Sarah

Had a fab couple of days; the weather was as gorgeous as it possibly could be. Campsite was good - no frills but it was right on the cycle trail so perfect for us, and it wasn’t busy so Joe spent a fair bit of time practising cycling on his own - he’s at that stage where he can balance as long as he’s going on the flat in a straight line, but ask him to turn and you’re in trouble! He’s beginning to get more confident though.

Yesterday we cycled from the campsite to the Bearslake Inn.

Today we went in the opposite direction and ended up at Okehampton Station - walked from there down a footpath to a viaduct (it was the path that if you turn right, takes you down to the park/sports centre - but we turned left) and found a spot by the river to have lunch, then cycled back to the campsite. By the time we got back today the kids were flagging somewhat!

It was great fun, so lovely to see the girls cycling off ahead of us enjoying themselves … glad we’ve managed to get van and bike racks sorted (for longer stays we’re still pondering the awning or pup tent question though!) … picked up a map of Dartmoor cycle trails in the shop at Okehampton Station and there are a few more of these ‘no-traffic’ cycle trails to try on it, perfect for the family at the moment :)

Home this afternoon and have done baths (much needed!) and house tidying, Butternut Squash risotto for tea, Doctor Who, now I’m settling down to Casualty (haven’t seen it for weeks!) and to add a bunch of friend codes to my game for some wifi tonight (Steve has gone out!).

the granite way looks really good. is it mostly flat then?

  2. Lin Says:

    Well done Joe.

Abbie looks strikingly like my little sister (did at that age) in the bottom photo - strange because she doesn’t normally look like her at all!

(Mind you my sis could do a wicked sulky face too,)

Helen - Yep, it is mainly flat with the odd hilly bit, but it mainly runs alongside the railway. There was one massive hill/windy path down to the bottom of the huge viaduct in the photo, but we just about managed it on the way back up!

  4. Lin Says:

erm, should have said ‘wickedly cute’ sulky face!

thanks sarah! if we cycle it, chris would be on the tandem pulling BB in a trailer, and he’d still get up there before me - sigh!

  6. Sarah Says:

The ideal thing for us (must as Russ to do this one day!) would be to have Steve’s dad drop us at Okehampton Station, then to take the van to his parents’ at Lydford, then we could do the whole thing in a day!

    Helen, it’s perfectly manageable, don’t worry ;)

Bearslake Inn was where A and I had lunch on her birthday in December, love the cycle practice photo and the crying one. I think crying children should be photographed whenever the opportunity arises - especially if blood involved…..

  8. Sarah Says:

Ha ha - have you got a flickr group for crying children, Chris? Steve commented that taking a photo of her at that moment made him feel like you ;)

  9. Roslyn Says:

I love taking photos of mine when they are crying!
