Moving Images Research Project

Promised I would link to this – Moving Images Research Project - I followed a comment on Ruth’s blog to find it, and have exchanged a few emails with Mark since – it seems like an interesting project. I know lots of us on the blogring (still consider myself part of it even if I am in a long period of hibernation!!) have thought long and hard about names and photos on our blogs so I thought it might be of interest to others. If anyone else is interested in taking part then Mark would be pleased to hear from you, and feel free to publicise the link.

I’m interested to see you’ve contacted him Sarah. I found it disconcerting that he’d found my blog and approached me. OK, I can’t be naive enough to think that I can control everyone who reads my blog but I don’t really want it to be that public (OK, I know, I could password it) but I only tell friends/family about it. I wouldn’t want work colleagues reading it.
I was even more disconcerted when I googled “mychildrencallmedaddy” to find it linked to a nude blog link. I suppose you have to live with this when you put items on the internet?
I am certainly not going to contact him!

That’s the interesting thing about it though, isn’t it? Putting family info on the net is a bit strange when you think about it too much. And photos, as well. I don’t think there is anyone who I wouldn’t want to read my blog, yes it’s personal but if things are *too* personal they don’t get put here, generally.
He’s a genuine chap doing genuine research, he sent me plenty of ways to check his credentials. And I’m quite interested in it really!

I thought it sounded fascinating – but then I would

I think it sounds really interesting too
I’ve had vague ponderings about this sort of thing before – what was once really just a private thing is now much more public, though in a sense we do rely on the anonyminity of the crowd to hide ourselves. . for most of us although it’s public, really we imagine it to be almost semi-public, in that we ahve alimited audience in mind and don’t really publicise them. but it’s good to remember that it is a public space, and anyone could come across it – it is ‘that public’ Ruth. Whcih is why we password some posts esp. ones that relate to work. I wonder as well what the children will make of it in the future when they are older.
One of the reasons I have for hiding the kids real names is that I wouldn’t want someone in the future to be able to do a quick search and pull up their childhoods

Though a quick search on our blog reveals a number of times real names have slipped through the net. Time for seach and replace on the database I guess.
