Haffertee’s Palace

November 25th, 2006 by Sarah

Well today had nothing planned, but as it turned out we’ve had a lovely day spending time on a spontaneous project … this morning someone advertised a big hamster cage on freecycle. I’ve tried getting bigger cages from freecycle before and missed them, but this time we were the first to reply, and boy is Haffertee a lucky hamster.

This is a handmade hamster palace, with four floors, and a clear panel at the bottom so you can see the burrowing/nesting/hiding bit as well. We went and picked it up from a lovely man who had made it himself for a rescued hamster. Hadn’t quite realised just how big it was but when we saw how great it was we couldn’t change our minds – and Abbie thought of a perfect place to put it, so we’ve squeezed it in. Gonna have to sell it to Anna as a new bedside table, it’s as tall as the bunk beds!!

So we spent a happy afternoon gluing lolly sticks onto a couple of planks to make ladders – typically Haffertee has been climbing the sides of the cage instead of using the ladders, but there we go. Then once we’d cleaned and prepared the cage we put Haff into it and he seemed to love it – took him a while to really go exploring but when he did he was away. So a huge thank you to Dave from Freecycle, it is fantastic and we all love it :D

We’re wondering how long it will take Steve to spot it, I suspect he will see the photos/read the blog before he notices it ;)

Oh my word. All that for just one hamster. Lucky guy!

So who gets the short straw for cleaning it out then? Send Joe in?

PS. I love the fact that you have logged this under ‘home improvement’ :)

lol, I know – to all of the above comments!! It won’t be quite so easy to take it out and empty the sawdust in the compost that’s for sure … but being as I’m *always* the one who cleans him out I didn’t mind giving myself a harder job …

Lucky hamster not feeling quite so lucky as his exploration seems to have led to a limp … now I’m feeling awful that I’ve been the cause of an injury but if he will climb the walls and refuse to use the ladders

Woah. Now let me get this straight though…the Hamster sleeps at the bottom and the water is at the top.

So when the poor hamster needs a quick drink mid-nap he has to climb the equivalant of everest! you mean mean people.

    Em xx

(just kidding on the meanness you know)

  18. Sarah Says:

“Thanks” for the photos! Olivia is now desperate for an identical one. I’ve gently explained to her that once she’s grown a tree big enough to saw planks from, and then learnt enough carpentry to actually make something from said planks, I have absolutely no problem with her then getting a hamster of her own. She seems fine with that at the moment……..I’m just waiting for the penny to drop with an almighty clank!!

I bet he can’t believe his luck. I really think you should get another hamster though, it must be lonely in there…
