Sharing dessert at Wagamama

June 15th, 2007 by Sarah

We have had a varied day. Josiah’s been with Becca, who looked after him so that I could be free to be a juror if necessary. In fact I didn’t have to; instead I spent my day helping out with walking Anna’s school year group to the local High School for a day of sports and science, and then at work with Steve.

Anna had a great time at St. Luke’s, but apparently it hasn’t convinced her to go. Abbie had a good day at school too, and Joe had a fab time with Becca, doing a model kit that he got for his birthday as well as a trip to the park with his scooter in tow.

We were going to go to the Exeter Festival opening night but as it was raining heavily (on and off) we shelved that idea and went to Wagamama instead – Josiah has been wanting to go for ages – well, since it opened last year. Had a fab meal there and then came home to watch Stormbreaker, Joe’s birthday dvd.

The bad news is that my ibook’s screen seems to be dying. It’s been a bit dodgy for a while (someone bashed the back of it rather hard once and it’s never been the same since) but now it’s even worse and I can only use it when it’s open at a 45 degree angle, which makes life a little difficult. Not quite sure what to do about it either :(

O.k. if I was a betting man I would bet that you have a new ibook within a month. Going on history that is.

You seem to get much better photos out of your F30 than me. I wonder if mine is duff or I am using the wrong settings.

probably get parts for about £40 and pictures via web. then theres your labour source.

    from http://ask.metafilter.com/28949/Busted-Ibook-screen
“I had this problem, and it wasn’t a logic board failure, it wasn’t the backlight switch, or anything like that.

You don’t say if the machine stays on when you open the screen all the way, but in my case it didn’t. As soon as you went beyond 90 degrees, *clunk* the hard drive died and the machine turned off.

We ripped the machine open and it turns out Apple bodged the design for the wires going to the screen. When the screen was open past 90 degrees, the power cable to the screen was getting smashed so hard against the chassis that it ended up arcing and causing a short. It was so bad that the actual point of contact was all burned brown.

We found the wires in question, stipped them a bit, wrapped them in insulating tape, and the whole problem was solved. We also slightly rerouted the wires, although there’s not much to work with down there.

  6. Sarah Says:

Yes, the machine does stay on, it’s literally the connection to the screen that is worn somehow. Steve took it apart and had a look but couldn’t work out which wire it was … I might try asking at PCWorld’s repair place and see what they quote (before I start dreaming about new ones, which could only possibly be if and when we sell the van, Mr P!).

  7. Sarah Says:

oh, and re the f30 – you’re a fibber, you’ve had some excellent photos out of yours – which is why I got one! I only ever use it on auto …

I’d be lost wihtout my ibook!

    Love Wagamama’s.

Well it’s working a bit better again this morning. Have backed it up in case I have to be without it any time soon though. Not that much stuff to back up tbh, only photos and music, all the rest of my stuff is easily accessed online, even if it would take me a while to get it all the way I wanted it again.

Would Anna be going up to high school this year then? I thought it was next year for some reason…

  11. Sarah Says:

No, next year, Lin. But neither she nor we are particularly decided on where, if at all.

    Hi Sarah,

Sorry to read about your iBook. I’d seriously suggest taking it to a Mac specialist. I wouldn’t dream of messing around with my MacBook without taking it to a specialist first… luckily, there is the Apple Store nearby, so I can pop in without too much hassle. What about yourself?

  13. Sarah Says:

No such luck. Haven’t tried pcworld yet though, it’s working at about 85degrees atm which is just about manageable!

  14. Neil Says:

Dare I ask how the hamster is?

  15. Sarah Says:

Still alive, unbelievably! But very almost-dead still. About to take it to the vet and hopefully get some liquid food for it.

  16. Neil Says:

Poor little thing. You should get a cat, they live longer and are a “proper” pet…

  17. Sarah Says:

try telling Steve that. The hamster got put down at the vets last night.

  18. Neil Says:

    Oh no :(
