Priorities for the day (updated!)

now edited with updates in italics!

1. Suntan
Yep, managed this a bit I think – and I don’t think anyone is burnt so that’s a bonus. We were all wearing suncream as it was *very* hot.

2. Have nice day with kids and friends (eat plenty of ice cream)
Well, it’s always tricky to help our kids last a whole day at a hill climb, but they did ok for the most part. Was nice to see friends who came as well. And we had 2 ice creams each :)

3. Fit in another cache if possible
Woo hoo, yes, at Blackbury Camp. Found a TB there too, a Jeep who came back to watch the racing with us. One more smiley face on my map :)

4. Oh yes, the motor racing!
Steve did his best time ever and came first in his class, was very pleased with himself. So a good day all round really!

Does that mean he finally beat that Cosworth?

  2. Sarah Says:

The Cosworth wasn’t there today ;)

  3. Tim Says:

OK, you got me, what GPS do I buy?

  4. Sarah Says:

Depends what you want it for and how much you want to spend. Ours was very cheap on ebay, it’s an old Garmin Etrex (not the newer Etrex H) but has been fine for what we’ve used it for. Then again it does sometimes get quite dodgy under tree cover. And I wish it were clever enough to download waypoints and notes from the computer but it’s not – well, I can get waypoints onto it from a PC (not the mac!) but not accompanying notes. So those are the things I’d look for if I were upgrading.

  5. Ruth Says:

Most GPSs get dodgy under tree cover, in built up areas or in areas of noisy electronic frequency.

  6. Roslyn Says:

Do all the leads etc come with that? I have one on my wish list on Amazon but as I’m new to such matters want to make sure about what else I should be getting with it!

  7. Sarah Says:

I think if you are buying a new up to date model it will do. Mine only came with a ‘device to serial port’ wire so I had to get a ‘serial port to usb’ as well … Ros, read up on yours and make sure it will talk to a mac!

  8. Chris Says:

Just get a phone with GPS :-)

  9. Sarah Says:

Hmm I have just the phone in mind ;)

  10. Alison Says:

C’s phone is very clever :) He has some bit of software that just looks up for you where the nearest cache is and gives you all the information, so you don’t even have to be prepared before you go out.

  11. Roslyn Says:

Not allowed a new phone for another year!

  12. Tim Says:

    Chris, what phone?

  13. Tim Says:

Sarah, this one? Makes me drool.

I think I might get Bluetooth GPS, which costs about £20 and then think about it.

  14. Sarah Says:

Sony Ericsson?! Nah, was thinking of one with an ‘i’ at the front ;)

I like the idea of being able to go out unprepared, Chris, what phone/software are you using?

  15. Tim Says:

iPhone? No. Can’t believe that anyone bought the original with no 3G. Reading user reviews it looks like they fall into two camps:-

    a) “It’s made by Apple so I think it’s wonderful. I have to use my old phone to call my friends and tell them how fantastic it is.”
    b) “It looks nice. I expected to be able to make phone calls at least. I am selling it on eBay.”

    :-)

  16. Chris Says:

Nokia N82. Geocachenavigator for s60 (which is free). I have read pretty shit reviews of iphone 3g with people claiming they need to charge it 3 times a day!!!! Clearly this is why it was originally 3g-less. They have no idea to control the power consumption.

  17. Tim Says:

N82 looks like the current pick of the crop. I have a SE K750i, which is a great little phone, I like it a lot, but I want HSDPA, so I was thinking of changing it for another SE, like the C902. I will have to have a look at the N82, they both cost £300, anyway. Would you buy another N82, Chris, and what are the rest of the features like (HSDPA, Camera, etc)?

  18. Chris Says:

I love my N82. I bough it sim-free for cash (rather than via a contract) and would buy another without a doubt. The camera is excellent. Lots of software (free) for S60 OS. Battery is not too bad – will last a couple of days with reasonable use. Will put some photos from it on my blog later.

  19. Tim Says:

Thanks – they look pretty good. I had a look at some other N82 photos on Flickr, and they look pretty impressive.

I like the idea of automatically geotagged photos, useful for Geograph.
