Josiah’s birth

Ahem … this account seems to be very short – but that’s because it was! But by far the best of our home birth experiences, so we’re glad to end on a good note, as it were. I think I wrote this soon after Joe’s arrival.

Well, we spent the evening unpacking Steve’s ‘baby’ – new amp and floorstanding speakers, and rearranging the whole downstairs of the house as a result.

I insisted that we left it tidy just in case…and as we went to bed at 11.30 my waters broke and things all started. It went pretty quickly so by 12.45 am we’d phoned the midwife who arrived around 1.15 am, then Josiah was born at 1.50 am. Everything was fine even though it was so quick – Anna came down and cut the cord with Steve’s help which was great, Abbie appeared as well and they both stayed up for cuddles etc before going back to bed half an hour later.

By 3.30 am the midwives had gone and we were clearing up and on our way back to bed! (This is definitely the way to do it!) So I’ve just phoned parents etc and now I’m hungry and waiting for someone to offer me breakfast in bed (in my dreams!). It’s great to have him here at last, I’m pretty chuffed with everything.

Joe just bornOther things that I really remember about this were that I really felt like I knew what I was doing, and didn’t need Steve’s support half as much as I had done with the girls. In fact, I think I was ordering him around for much of the time, we didn’t have time to get ready really so he was running around after the camera, and that sort of thing. I still appreciated the gas and air though!

When Joe was born he had the cord around his neck and we thought for one horrible moment that Anna wouldn’t make it to do the cord-cutting honours, but thankfully the midwife managed to slip it over his head.

Steve woke both the girls and they came down in that lovely half asleep state and were so excited and pleased to see Josiah, and that was the best bit for me.
